Formula Student is an international engineering competition that challenges teams to design, manufacture and test a prototype formula style racing car. The University of Hertfordshire’s 2018 entry was named ‘UH21’. The car featured a twin cylinder Honda CBR500 combustion engine, extensive aerodynamics package and tubular space frame chassis. The vehicle suspension system incorporated a double wishbone design with direct dampers at the front and rear.
I was a key member of the management team leading the development of the driver controls whilst further contributing to the following areas:
Composite Manufacture (Bodywork and Wings)
Fuel Tank Design & Manufacture
Drawing Approval
ECU Calibration (Life F88)
Race/Data Engineer
Static Events - Costing & Design
I have been working trackside for over 5 years with experience in a wide range of positions.
This page documents the vehicles and championships I have competed in with highlights including:
Britcar - Overall and class victories with KTM and Porsche
British GT - Podiums with both Aston Martin and KTM
GT Open - Overall Victory
Formula Ford 1600 - Victories
The Design, Development and Manufacture of a Steering System for a Single Seater Race Car.
My final year project focused on the design and development of the steering wheel and associated components for UH21. The primary aim of the project was to reduce mass in the steering wheel whilst developing the fundamental ergonomics.
Outcome
The project had a successful outcome with a 0.5kg weight saving in the steering wheel assembly with no mechanical or electrical failures during competition.
Design and development of a large capacity fuel tank for the Audi TT. This project contributed to a final year vehicle engineering and design module.
A personal 3D printing project making use of the thingiverse model linked below.
The assembly was printed using my Wanhoo Duplicator i3 plus (FDM machine).

12 Month Industrial Placement
6 month rotation in Quality Engineering with responsibility for over 30 components. Represented manufacturing in weekly fault meetings and successfully implemented containment solutions.
6 month rotation in manufacturing responsible for the development of fixtures and tooling. Design work completed using CATIA V5 and drawings created to BS8888. Managed introduction of SLA 3D printer and created best practices.
Complimenting my engineering and motorsport projects, I have skills in animation, motion graphics and video production. This page shows a selection of personal and professional work.
A University project where groups were challenged to design the cooling and grill area for a concept vehicle.
The project was completed using CATIA V5 with GSD workbenched used for surfacing the bodywork.
A selection of auto desk design challenges completed using Fusion 360.
